Desphianna Phillips is a 22-year-old Trinidadian born fashion designer who best describes herself as an extroverted, spontaneous young lady with a passion for fashion! Phillips grew up heavily involved in the arts with her father being involved in different art forms like music, singing and poetry and believes that her fascination for design stemmed from this. From a young age, she states that her drawings were always fashion illustrated and it was not until age nine that she created her first masterpiece: a hand-sewn pleated skirt. It was after this, that she received her first sewing machine from her mother.

On the broad spectrum of design, Desphianna focuses on creating beautiful clothing pieces that meets the needs of all women however, she more or less builds her brand and niche on creating evening gowns. “Fashion is a language used by everyone”, she says and with this in mind, she aims to build a platform, leave a mark and influence people through her work. Phillips believes that “if you don’t love something, no matter how much time is invested, it will eventually break you and you will give up” and uses this as her personal mantra to trod on despite her beliefs that in Trinidad it is difficult to pursue a career in fashion because of the “basic Trinidadian mentality” of pushing things to the side without allowing progress.

Apart from an undying love for what she does, Phillips lives by two main skillsets, patience and consistency and believes that ‘teamwork makes the dream work’. She advises anyone willing to pursue a career in the fashion field needs to understand that it is not an easy forte and that pure passion for what you want to do is what is going to see you through.
